A muscle tear and a late withdrawal
Andrea Ustero has withdrawn from Málaga P1 with Ari Sánchez. The young Spaniard is dealing with a muscle tear that prevents her from competing in the tournament. The affected muscle, the grade of the injury and the expected recovery time have not been specified in the information currently available.
The withdrawal automatically removes the entire pair. Ari Sánchez cannot continue with a replacement once the draw has been made. The vacant place is set to go to a pair from qualifying under lucky loser status, changing the women’s draw just before the leading seeds begin their campaigns.
The absence matters at the top of the field. The organisers had presented Sánchez and Ustero as the third-ranked pair in the women’s event, behind Gemma Triay–Delfi Brea and Paula Josemaría–Bea González. The Málaga Premier Padel P1 runs from 11 to 19 July 2026 at the Martín Carpena, with the main draw having started on Monday 13 July.
Two titles in 2026 and momentum brought to a sudden halt
The withdrawal comes just as the duo had established itself among the circuit’s leading teams. According to the International Padel Federation, Andrea Ustero is seventh in the world ranking published on 13 July, while Ari Sánchez is fifth. Both players have posted a record of 28 wins and 10 losses in 2026.
Their partnership has already won two tournaments this season: the Riyadh Season P1 in February and the Valencia P1 in June. They also reached the Italy Major final. Those results had made Sánchez and Ustero credible title contenders in Málaga, where the loss of a leading seed can alter the balance of the later rounds.
The priority now lies away from the rankings. A muscle tear usually requires a gradual return, but no reliable timetable can be given without knowing the location and severity of the injury. Any prediction about the next tournament would therefore be premature.
For Ari Sánchez, the withdrawal means a week without competition and no chance to extend the momentum built with her partner. For Andrea Ustero, the task is to recover fully before returning first to training and then to the court. The next decisive update will concern not the Málaga draw, but the date of her comeback.
