The men’s table explodes
The big clash of the day obviously came from Gutiérrez and Alfonso. Opposed by Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto, seeds n°2 and champions of the Premier Padel P2 in Gijón, they scored a clean win in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, which instantly changed the reading of the tournament. It’s not just another performance: it’s the match that shatters the expected hierarchy in the bottom half and puts several cards back on the table ahead of the final weekend.
This was not an isolated incident. In the same last four, Aguirre and Arroyo saw off Yanguas and Stupaczuk 6-3, 6-3, while Lebrón and Augsburger dominated Collado and Hernández 6-3, 6-1. On the other side, Tapia and Coello also booked their place after an interrupted quarterfinal against Campagnolo and Bautista. As a result, the men’s last four at Cancún features Tapia/Coello, Aguirre/Arroyo, Lebrón/Augsburger and Gutiérrez/Alfonso, a rare mix of announced favourites and pairs who have perfectly seized the opening draw. For a P2 placed just before Miami, this turning point already weighs heavily on the dynamics of the circuit.
Two seeds fall in the women’s category
The women’s draw was also shaken up. Guinart and Virseda eliminated Ari Sánchez and Andrea Ustero 7-5, 6-3, a surprising result given that Sánchez and Ustero had already reached two finals at the start of the season. Ortega and Calvo went on to defeat Fernández and Araújo 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Two quarterfinals, two upsets, and the very clear feeling that the tournament has changed its face in the space of a few hours.
What changes is clear: the semifinals’ big match-ups are now much more open than expected. Triay and Brea, who dispatched Rodriguez and Dal Pozzo (6-1, 6-1), will meet Guinart and Virseda. In the other half, Josemaría and Bea González, solid against Salazar and Alonso (6-2, 6-2), will cross paths with Ortega and Calvo. In other words, Cancún retains two locomotives in the women’s draw, but the outsiders have already achieved the essential: breaking the expected scenario and installing real sporting tension before the semifinals.
