**Common padel mistakes** are not all caused by bad racket technique. An unsuitable grip, straight legs, poor defensive positioning or a lob played under pressure can cost you the rally. In a [nine-minute video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4-w5wI9idw), Belgian player and coach [Maxime Deloyer](https://www.maximedeloyerpadel.be/) shows how to correct twelve of these habits.

His advice is aimed mainly at recreational players who want to improve by making fewer technical and tactical mistakes. These differ from rule violations such as a double bounce or hitting the ball into the net.

## What are the most common technical mistakes in padel?

Deloyer first looks at the racket grip, wrist action and footwork. He wants players to hit the ball in front of their body, in balance, instead of making up for late preparation with extra power.

1. **Holding the racket like a tennis racket.** Use a continental, or hammer, grip for better control of everyday padel shots.
2. **Flicking the wrist too much.** Avoid sudden wrist movements. Deloyer favours a stable wrist and a shot led by the arm and shoulder.
3. **Playing with straight legs.** Bend your knees slightly and keep stable footing to handle low balls.
4. **Preparing too late.** Turn sideways when time allows, prepare the racket early and contact the ball in front of your body. Use your free hand for balance.

## At the back: mistakes with positioning, glass walls and lobs

In defence, positioning matters as much as shot selection. Moving too close to the service line or lobbing a difficult ball often gives opponents an easy attack.

1. **Refusing to use the glass.** Leave space behind you and learn to use the rebound off the wall when the ball lands deep.
2. **Failing to recover your position.** Return to a suitable defensive position instead of staying at the service line after playing a ball off the glass.
3. **Stopping in the transition zone.** Follow a good lob all the way to the net with your partner. If it falls short, stay back and defend rather than taking a volley at your feet.
4. **Lobbing every ball under pressure.** Lob when the ball is under control. A flatter shot or a chiquita can change the pace and create a better opportunity.

## At the net: volley mistakes and teamwork

On volleys, accuracy matters more than raw pace. Deloyer recommends compact movements and moving opponents around before attempting to finish the rally.

1. **Taking too big a volley swing.** Start by blocking with a compact movement. Extend the swing only on an easier ball.
2. **Always hitting the same diagonal.** Vary the direction and find open spaces instead of hitting hard without moving the opposing pair.
3. **Forgetting your partner.** Anticipate the next ball even when your teammate hits. Their shot may create the opening for you to finish the point.
4. **Stopping after the serve.** Keep moving towards the net to join your partner and avoid leaving an open gap.

The Belgian emphasises the need to play together:
