The event is scheduled for May 9 and 10, 2026 at Slazenger Padel Leeds North, with men’s and women’s tables, teams of two to three players and a nomination already extended to the 2026-2027 season. In other words, we’re no longer talking about a simple test weekend, but the entry of padel into a framework recognized, scheduled and assumed by the university ecosystem.

This launch does not come from nowhere. UK PADEL had already set the scene in Bristol in February 2025 with a first university championship bringing together 143 students and 37 teams. A year later, the 2026 edition changed volume: 67 teams from 23 universities competed on men’s, women’s and mixed tables. This figure does not yet replace the depth of an old university championship, but it already tells a story of reality on the court: the base exists, the pairs are being structured and the level is beginning to go beyond the simple adaptation from tennis.

Malaga pushes the cursor much higher

At the same time, the global project is gaining momentum in Malaga. FISU has included padel in its official schedule for 2025, and the discipline is due to host its first World University Championship in 2026. The official Malaga 2026 website announces an event organized by the University of Malaga, designed to welcome delegations from 32 countries, while the FIP entry already refers to women’s, men’s and mixed competitions. The scale changes here: national team selection, international logistics, accreditations and multisport frame.

The timetable at the start of 2026 shows, above all, that the project is moving away from communication and towards operational implementation. A newsletter published in January, a call for 25 international volunteers in February, a FISU-FIP inspection visit to Malaga on March 16 to check accommodation, competition venues, athlete services and general procedures: institutionalization can now be seen in the organizational details as much as in the speeches.

Markers of a change of scale

The link-up between Leeds and Malaga has created a real industry. On the one hand, the BUCS offer the UK an official, clearer doorway for universities, sports managers and partners. On the other hand, Malaga sets an international horizon that forces national structures to think in terms of selection, competition tempo and the culture of high-level students. The discrepancy is instructive: BUCS starts cautiously with men and women, and mentions a possible mixed format later on, whereas the FISU event already incorporates it into its architecture.

For padel, this is a major turning point. A sport really grows when it no longer depends solely on private clubs or an urban fad, but when it finds its place in university calendars, with its own rules, host sites, volunteers, budgets and soon its gateways to the international arena. At this tempo, student padel could soon become a real training ground for future national pairs, far beyond the simple campus event.

To remember:

In May 2026, BUCS launches its first official padel championships with UK PADEL in Leeds.

The movement builds on a base already visible in the UK PADEL university championships in Bristol.

In Malaga, the first FISU University World Championship has already put padel on the international and mixed map.

University padel reaches a milestone: BUCS launches its first official championships in the UK, while Malaga prepares for the first ever FISU World Championship.

[176,362

308
0":"post-110710","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-padel-in-depth","8":"category-padel-united-kingdom
["GET
