Ball touches the fence in padel: rule and fault

In padel, the fence can extend a rally after a valid bounce, but the service rule is much stricter.

Ball touches the fence in padel: yes, a ball can touch the fence in padel and remain playable, but only if it first bounced in the opponents’ court during a rally. If it hits the opponents’ fence directly before the court, it is a fault. On serve, service box then fence before the second bounce is also a fault.

The simple idea is this: the fence is part of the court for the ball’s trajectory, but only in the right context. FIP rules also state that the ball remains in play when it touches part of the court after bouncing in the opponents’ court, including the metallic fence.

Short answer: yes in a rally, no on serve

The common question is therefore clear: the fence counts in padel during a rally after a valid bounce. It does not save a ball that hits an opposing surface before the court, and it makes the serve a fault when touched before the second bounce.

During a rally, the fence can keep the point alive

A ball that first bounces in the opponents’ court and then hits the fence remains part of normal padel play. Some players even aim for that zone because the rebound is often harder to read than a classic glass rebound.

The fence is therefore a useful but risky target. If the shot is poorly measured, the ball can go out, come back in an easy way or give the defenders time. Used well, it forces the opponent to react quickly, stay low and handle a less predictable trajectory.

On serve, the fence means fault

The serve is stricter. If the served ball bounces in the correct service box and then touches the metallic fence before the second bounce, it is a fault. The same logic applies when a serve touches the net: it can only be replayed as a let if it lands in the correct box without touching the fence before the second bounce.

To avoid debates, keep this practical marker: in a rally, court first and fence after can be playable; on serve, service box then fence before the second bounce is a fault.

What if the player touches the fence?

Separate the ball trajectory from player contact with the structure. A player should not use the fence as support to play a ball, stop dangerously or interfere with opponents. In competition, the umpire decides according to the situation.

A simple marker for beginners

Remember this phrase: court first, fence after. During a rally, that can remain good if the bounce is in the opponents’ court. Fence first, before the opponents’ court, is a fault. On serve, contact with the fence after the bounce in the service box is also a fault.

This distinction prevents most club-level arguments. It also helps players defend better, because a ball into the fence is not always random: it often rewards the player who stays balanced, low and ready to play early.

Fence in padel – Useful but tricky

The ball hitting the fence in padel can remain playable during a rally if it first bounced correctly in the court.

On serve, it is different: if the ball touches the fence after landing in the service box and before the second bounce, the serve is a fault.

FAQ – Ball and fence in padel

1. Can the ball hit the fence during a rally?

Yes, if it first bounced correctly in the opponents’ court.

2. Is a ball directly into the opponents’ fence a fault?

Yes, if it touches the fence before bouncing in the opponents’ court.

3. Is the fence allowed on serve?

No in the usual case: if the ball lands in the box and then touches the fence before the second bounce, the serve is a fault.

4. Is the fence the same as the glass?

No. Glass gives a more regular rebound, while the fence creates more unpredictable trajectories.

5. Why aim at the fence?

Because the rebound can bother the opponent, especially when the ball arrives low or with spin.

6. Is it a good tactic for beginners?

Not always. Beginners often gain more by playing deep and simple before looking for the fence.

7. How do you defend a ball into the fence?

Stay low, move your feet forward and accept that the trajectory will be less predictable.

8. Can the fence help the defender?

Yes, if the attacking shot is poorly measured. The ball can come out in a playable way.

9. What if the serve touches the net and then the fence?

It is not a valid let if the ball touches the fence before the second bounce.

10. What is the simple rule?

Rally: court then fence can be playable. Serve: box then fence before the second bounce is a fault.
