Handling pressure in a padel tournament is not about removing stress completely. It is about channelling it with a simple routine, accepting a few mistakes and returning to clear tactical choices when the score gets tight.
The difficulty of tournament padel is not only the level of the opponents. It is also the context: a draw to survive, a partner to support, people around the court and key points that feel heavier than in training. That is when the arm tightens and simple choices become less obvious.
Prepare a routine before the match
Pressure is easier to handle before the first point. Arrive early, warm up properly, know the match format and agree on two or three cues with your partner. Keep the routine short: breathing, tactical target, first service pattern and first return pattern.
Instead of thinking “I have to win”, think “I play high on difficult balls, aim through the middle when I doubt and move with my partner”. These cues do not guarantee victory, but they give you a plan when emotions rise.
Return to simple choices under pressure
On big points, many players look for the perfect shot. Often the smarter answer is the opposite: a deep ball through the middle, a high lob, a volley into the body or a cross-court return with margin. Padel often rewards the player who chooses the right zone rather than the brightest shot.
After a mistake, close the moment quickly. A short word with your partner, one breath and a clear cue for the next point are enough. In tournament padel, clarity can matter almost as much as technique.
FAQ
How do you stop shaking in a padel tournament?
Do not try to remove stress entirely. Breathing, simple cues and safe target zones help turn tension into concentration.
What should you do after a big mistake?
Cut it quickly: accept it, speak briefly with your partner and choose one clear instruction for the next point.
What shot should you play under pressure?
The safest choices are often a deep middle ball, a high lob or a volley into the body. The goal is to recover margin before looking for a winner.
How can you help a stressed partner?
Give a simple, positive cue rather than criticism. A stressed partner needs a concrete plan, not a comment on the mistake.
