Leaving the court in padel: rule and conditions

Yes, leaving the court in padel is allowed to play a ball, but only if the court permits out-of-court play and the ball is still live: no second bounce, no decisive outside obstacle, and enough safe space to exit the court.

Leaving the court in padel: the short answer

Leaving the court in padel is allowed to play a ball, but only if the court is approved or configured for out-of-court play. The ball must also still be playable: it must not have bounced twice or touched an outside obstacle that ends the point.

A “court exit” means temporarily leaving the court through a side gate to chase a ball that has gone outside the enclosure, often after a smash or a par 3. It looks spectacular in professional padel, but it is not automatic at club level: everything depends on safety and the court layout.

Only some courts allow it

Padel allows out-of-court play under precise conditions. The International Padel Federation rules distinguish between courts where outside play is authorized and courts where it is not. In practice, the court needs suitable side openings and enough free space around it for the player to exit safely.

On many amateur courts, gates may exist but the surroundings do not always allow real outside play: a nearby wall, bench, post, separation net or lack of clearance can make it unsafe. In that case, even if the ball leaves the court, the point is not played like on professional courts designed for these outside chases.

When can a ball be played outside?

The best-known case is the par 3: the ball bounces in the opponent’s court, goes out over the side wall, and a defender tries to retrieve it from outside. If out-of-court play is authorized, the player may leave through the gate, hit the ball outside and send it back into the opponent’s court.

However, leaving the court is forbidden or irrelevant if the court does not provide for it, if the ball has already bounced a second time, or if it has touched an outside element unrelated to the court before being played. Leaving the court does not artificially extend the rally: it only works while the ball is officially still in play.

The right habit in amateur matches

The main padel rule remains the same: a ball must first bounce in the opponent’s court to be good, then it stays playable until the point is over. If it directly hits the fence or an opponent’s wall before that bounce, it is a fault; if it goes out after a valid bounce, out-of-court play can exist only on a suitable court.

A common service question: if a serve lands correctly in the box and then goes directly out through an authorized opening, the point may go to the server under the out-of-court play conditions. On a court where outside play is not authorized, the rule for that setup applies.

Before a match, especially in a tournament or at an unfamiliar club, it is better to clarify whether out-of-court play in padel is allowed on that court. It avoids disputes on spectacular points and prevents unnecessary risks.

FAQ – Leaving the court in padel

1. Can you leave the court to play a ball in padel?

Yes. Leaving the court in padel is allowed if the court permits out-of-court play and the ball is still live.

On a court that is not adapted for it, leaving the court is not a normal playing option.

2. What is an out-of-court play in padel?

It is the action of temporarily leaving the court through a side opening to hit a ball that has gone outside the enclosure, often after a smash or a par 3.

3. When is leaving the court forbidden in padel?

It is forbidden or not applicable if the court does not authorize outside play, if the ball has already bounced twice, or if it touches an outside obstacle before being played.

4. Can you leave the court to defend a par 3?

Yes, if out-of-court play is authorized. The defender can try to retrieve the ball outside and return it before the point is over.
