The 2026 Marbella Reserve Cup came down to a very decisive turning point in the final set. Facing off against Alejandro Galán and Leo Augsburger, Arturo Coello and Javi Garrido won 6-3, 6-4, securing the point that sealed Team Sierra Blanca Estates’ victory in this unique padel tournament.
One final match that changes how we look at the week
The Reserve Cup is not a traditional ranking tournament. The event, described on its official website as a series that combines elite padel with a premium experience, is based on a team format, unique pairings, and highly entertaining matches of spectacle. For the audience, the main draw is simple: seeing how top players adapt to unusual partners in a short-format setting where every team point can change the team’s ranking.
In this context, the final duel had everything it took to capture the spotlight. On one side were Galán and Augsburger, a pairing as spectacular as it was unlikely, with two players who are very attack-oriented. On the other, Coello and Garrido, a Spanish pair built around power, impact at the net, and the ability to take control of short rallies.
The score, 6-3, 6-4, tells the story of a controlled victory. Coello and Garrido didn’t just win a big match-up—they closed the door on Team Reserve just when the scenario still left a glimmer of hope. For Team Sierra Blanca Estates, this victory provides a clear conclusion to a competition built on rotating lineups and collective pressure.
Coello-Garrido: A Complementarity That Is Immediately Apparent
What stands out most is the pair’s chemistry. Coello brings his usual physical presence—that ability to cover a lot of court and make every high ball dangerous. Garrido, for his part, adds another dimension: he’s more direct, very aggressive during acceleration, and capable of turning a neutral ball into an offensive sequence.
Opposite them, Galán and Augsburger formed a nearly experimental big match-up. Galán, who had been more accustomed to operating on the left side in recent seasons, had to adapt to a different role, while Augsburger remained the breakthrough player, the one looking to finish quickly. On paper, the pair promised to be explosive. On the track, it also revealed the natural limitations of a pair designed for a single event, not an entire season.
The difference came down to game management. Coello and Garrido seemed better at handling dips, choosing the right moments for acceleration, and closing down the space at the net. In a showcase match, these details can take a back seat. Here, they carried a lot of weight, because the point awarded to the team gave the duel real sporting significance.
The Reserve Cup confirms its unique role
Held in Marbella at Puente Romano, the Reserve Cup holds a special place on the calendar. It is not a replacement for either Premier Padel or the CUPRA FIP Tour, but it offers something different: a testing ground for pairings, a more flexible format, and an international showcase featuring players already well-known to the general padel public.
The 2026 edition also provided confirmation of the appeal of this team format. Pairings change, the balance of power shifts, and players step outside their comfort zones. For spectators, this is precisely what makes the event so engaging: you’re not just watching to see who wins; you’re observing how players with typically distinct styles can adjust to each other in a short-format frame.
Coello and Garrido’s victory, therefore, means more than just a result. It serves as a reminder that an exhibition event can yield real insights into tactics when players approach it with sufficient commitment. And it provides Team Sierra Blanca Estates with the perfect send-off: a title secured by two Spanish players in a match that had every reason to draw attention.
