Padel Belgium at the BOIC: the 86th federation to make its mark on Belgian sports
Padel Belgium has officially joined the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee, better known by the acronym BOIC. With this addition, the Belgian Olympic Committee now represents 86 national sports federations, including 42 Olympic disciplines. For Belgian padel, the announcement goes beyond mere administrative formalities: it marks a milestone in the recognition of a sport that has undergone a profound transformation in just a few years.
Long viewed as a rapidly growing recreational sport, padel has now established itself as a well-organized part of the Belgian sports landscape. Clubs, indoor courts, padel schools, tournaments, junior competitions, and elite-level programs have enabled the sport to take deep root. Padel Belgium ’s admission to the BOIC confirms this evolution and gives the movement additional visibility among national sports institutions.
This recognition does not mean that padel will automatically become an Olympic sport. Above all, it sends a strong institutional signal: Belgian padel is now recognized, organized, and represented within a central body of Belgian sports. For both clubs and players, this is an important step in consolidating an ecosystem that is attracting more and more participants.
A springboard for clubs, young people, and international ambitions
The decision comes at a time when Belgium is regularly cited as one of the most dynamic European countries in the development of padel. The sport has experienced rapid growth, driven by the opening of numerous clubs, the proliferation of courts, and the arrival of new generations of players. This growth is evident in both amateur play and high-level competition.
For Padel Belgium, this membership in the BOIC can bolster the credibility of the national project. It can also help better structure the pathways between training, national competitions, national team selections, young talent, and international events. In a sport where progress depends as much on the quality of coaches as on the frequency of tournaments, this additional frame can become a valuable asset.
This integration could also play a role in gaining recognition for padel among institutions, partners, and local authorities. For a sport that is still in the early stages of developing its federal structure, being represented within the BOIC helps to further establish padel within the Belgian sports landscape, on par with other already well-established disciplines.
A Belgian path aligned with the Olympic movement
On the international stage, padel is also continuing to build ties with the Olympic movement. The sport will once again be featured at the 2027 European Games in Istanbul, following its debut in Kraków in 2023. The path to the Olympic Games remains open, but it is not yet a done deal. Padel Belgium’s entry into the BOIC is therefore part of a broader trend: that of a sport seeking to grow without rushing things.
For Belgian padel, this recognition comes at a strategic moment. Rudi Diels Honored with the COIB Order of Merit
This BOIC-COIB General Assembly, held on June 4 in Tubize at the Royal Belgian Football Association’s headquarters, also featured the presentation ofthe COIB Order of Merit. This award is presented annually to an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to the Olympic Movement in Belgium.
This year, the award was presented to Rudi Diels, a leading figure in Belgian sports. A former national track and field coach, he is best known for his work with the Belgian women’s 4×100-meter relay team—composed of Olivia Borlée, Hanna Mariën, Élodie Ouédraogo, and Kim Gevaert—which won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
His career extends far beyond track and field. Rudi Diels has also contributed to the development of Belgian bobsleigh through the Belgian Bullets project, as well as to the Paralympic movement, notably alongside Marieke Vervoort.
