Belgium results: the men are 10-0 before Sweden
Belgium’s men’s team won its first two Group D ties by the same score: 5-0 against Lithuania and 5-0 against Slovakia. All five age categories, from 40+ to 60+, were won in straight sets on both days. Belgium therefore enters the final group tie with ten matches won and a 20-0 record in sets.
Sweden has exactly the same team record, with two 5-0 wins and ten rubbers won. The Belgium-Sweden tie will decide first place in Group D. Under the format published by the FIP, the group winner enters the 1st-to-8th-place draw from the quarterfinals. Belgium’s men finished 11th at the 2024 World Championship in La Nucía, according to Padel Belgium, so winning the group would already guarantee a better final position than two years ago.
Before the draw, Nicolas Gervais summed up the objective in a LinkedIn post (translated from French):
“If we want to finish in the top 8, we’ll have to avoid a ‘padel monster’ ( 🇦🇷 , 🇪🇸)!”
The draw placed Belgium alongside Sweden, Slovakia and Lithuania. After two days without dropping a set, a Top 8 place now depends on the result against Sweden.
The women opened with a 5-0 win and are playing Great Britain
Belgium’s women’s team also started its group stage with a 5-0 win, against Ecuador. Geukens/Vanhyfte, Buelens/Georges, Hermans/Claes and Maes/Werckx all won 6-0, 6-0. Sabine Appelmans and Daphne Vande Zande won 6-1, 6-0. Ecuador therefore won just one game across the ten sets played.
First place in Group F is being decided on Wednesday against Great Britain, which also beat Ecuador 5-0. At 5:30 p.m. in Belgium, the official FIP live results showed the tie at 1-1 after the first two completed matches. Katrien Hermans and Annick Claes lost 3-6, 4-6 to S. Fisher and T. Catlin. Appelmans and Vande Zande levelled the tie by beating H. Crook and V. Davies 6-3, 6-1.
First place keeps Belgium in the 1-to-8 draw
The FIP places group winners in the draw for positions 1 to 8. The runners-up compete for positions 9 to 16. Belgium’s women finished 6th at the 2024 World Championship. Winning their group guarantees another finish among the top eight teams.
