The London P1 quarterfinals take place on Friday at Olympia London. In the men’s draw, Mariano Gonzalez and Curro Cabeza extended their run by beating Nacho Piotto and Juan Cruz Belluati 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Their next challenge is a meeting with world No. 1 pair Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia. In the women’s draw, Marta Talavan and Jessica Castelló are also still alive after a 7-5, 6-1 win over Marina Guinart and Ale Alonso.
The official order of play features six matches on center court and two on court 2, starting at 10 a.m. in London, 11 a.m. CEST. The official FIP draw confirms all eight matchups. For more tournament background, read our London P1 preview.
Gonzalez-Cabeza face the pair they study
Gonzalez and Cabeza have already come through two three-set matches. They first knocked out seventh seeds Fran Guerrero and Javi Leal 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, then beat Piotto and Belluati. Coello and Tapia defeated Alex Arroyo and José Jimenez 7-6, 6-4 in the round of 16. Their quarterfinal is the third match scheduled on center court.
The matchup carries extra context after an interview Mariano Gonzalez gave to AS on July 22. The Paraguayan explained that his pair studies the world No. 1s closely for tactical ideas. The quote below is translated from Spanish.
“We watch Coello and Tapia’s matches a lot because they are a left-hander and a right-hander, like us.”
In London, that reference becomes the opponent. Gonzalez-Cabeza now have to turn their tactical study into solutions against a pair that closed its round-of-16 match in straight sets.
Talavan-Castelló and Caldera-Goenaga challenge the seeds
Play starts at 10 a.m. local time with Marta Talavan and Jessica Castelló against second seeds Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez. Talavan-Castelló arrive after a 7-5, 6-1 win over Guinart-Alonso. Josemaria-Gonzalez recorded the same score against Lucia Martinez and Agueda Perez.
Next up, Bea Caldera and Carmen Goenaga face Ari Sanchez and Andrea Ustero. Caldera-Goenaga beat Noemi Aguilar and Letizia Manquillo 6-3, 6-0, while Sanchez-Ustero defeated Martina Fassio and Raquel Eugenio 6-4, 6-4. The other women’s quarterfinals are Gemma Triay-Delfi Brea against Marta Ortega-Sofia Araujo, and Claudia Fernandez-Martina Calvo against Tamara Icardo-Claudia Jensen.
