Changing racket will not suddenly give you a better lob or better game reading. Equipment can still make certain actions easier or more demanding. The difference depends less on the logo than on weight, mass distribution, inertia, vibration and the effective hitting zone.
What the studies measure
In 2022, researchers at the Universitat Politècnica de València measured 137 padel rackets. Their weight ranged from 316 to 387 grams, with an average of 363 grams. The balance point ranged from 246 to 283 mm from the end of the handle. The authors focused on quantifying inertia, which contributes to how difficult a racket feels to move. Their manoeuvrability index was then compared with the perceptions of 50 players, who found it easier to identify rackets at the extremes of the scale. The study is available in the UPV repository.
A second study used a robot to strike 225 rackets along their central axis. One important finding was that sweet spot position could not be predicted simply from shape, weight, balance or moment of inertia. The shortcut “round = low sweet spot, diamond = high sweet spot” is therefore not enough to describe every racket on the market. The results were published in Sensors.
When the racket changes your game
Lower inertia makes a racket easier to set in motion. That matters on a reflex volley, a defence after the glass or a ball taken late. Higher inertia, by contrast, increases the racket’s resistance to twisting on an off-centre impact. The player gains stability but needs more effort to accelerate and reposition the racket.
Coach Sandy Farquharson of The Padel School sums up the principle in his equipment guide:
“Your style of play dictates what type of racket you should play with.”
His practical advice follows the same logic: narrow the choice to a few models, then test them on court, ideally in a match. This is the approach recommended by The Padel School.
What it will never fix
The best racket for a player is not automatically the most expensive one or the model used by a professional. It is the racket the player can move on time, strike consistently and use through an entire match without changing technique to compensate for the equipment.
A racket will not fix late positioning, poor preparation, weak tactical choices or inconsistent contact. It can make those flaws more visible when the racket is too demanding.
