Four wins for Clément Geens in Düsseldorf
Clément Geens and Nacho Moragues Moltò won four matches before losing to Maxi Arce and Juan Tello on Thursday 8 October in the round of 16 at the Germany P2. Beaten 7-5, 6-3, the Belgian and the Spaniard leave Düsseldorf after coming through three qualifying rounds and the opening round of the main draw.
World No. 70 in the FIP rankings of 5 October, Geens teamed up with Spain’s Nacho Moragues Moltò this week. Their run began on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Simone Iacovino and Giulio Graziotti. On Monday, they beat Simone Vaccari and Ignacio Alonso Chillarón 6-3, 6-4. The final qualifying round took three sets: on Tuesday, Geens and Moragues defeated Álvaro Montiel and Daniel Santigosa 6-3, 6-7, 6-2.
On Wednesday, they beat Javier Barahona and Ignacio Piotto 6-3, 6-4 to reach the last 16. Against Arce and Tello, their fifth match in five days ended in a straight-sets defeat. Geens pointed to missed break opportunities and their opponents’ stronger play at crucial moments.
Clément Geens discusses his tournament with Actu Padel
After his last-16 match, Clément Geens spoke to Actu Padel about his run in Düsseldorf and the missed chances against Arce and Tello.
How do you feel after this last-16 match?
We lost 7-5, 6-3. Of course, we’re a little disappointed after the match because we did have some chances. We played a good match overall.
What made the difference?
They played better at the important moments. We managed to create quite a few break points that we couldn’t convert. Those little things made the difference. Well done to them for that. But we gave a good account of ourselves. We played our match, fought well until the end and played well. I think we made the right tactical choices.
How do you assess your week in Düsseldorf?
A very good tournament overall, four wins here and one defeat. We could feel that we were starting to get a little tired too. We’ve been here since Saturday midday and played every day on a really slow court. The carpet is soft, so it’s hard on the legs.
What comes next?
We need to try to keep this good momentum going and continue from Saturday in Milan, where I’ll be playing with Dylan.
Geens will therefore reunite with Dylan Guichard, his regular partner, in Milan from Saturday 10 October, following this week alongside Moragues.
