An injury sustained in Madeira
Laura Luján says she was injured at the FIP Silver São João da Madeira in late September. After several medical tests, the 21-year-old said doctors had identified multiple bone and ligament injuries. She will need several months away from competition, bringing her 2026 season to an end.
The official FIP profile lists that tournament as her latest appearance, with a quarter-final finish worth 14 points. In the ranking published on September 28, the Seville-born player is world No. 47 with 1,328 points. Her best ranking of the season is No. 44.
In her Instagram post, Luján says the enforced break is hard to accept because she had just started a project she was especially excited about with Araceli Martínez.
Sometimes you have to stop.
She says the pause comes at a time when she wanted to continue building that partnership. No precise return date has been announced.
A season with highlights in Abidjan, Málaga and Bucharest
In June, Luján won the FIP Gold Abidjan with Araceli Martínez, her first title at that level, after beating Noa Cánovas and Laia Rodríguez 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in the final. The FIP said at the time that the victory took her to 14 CUPRA FIP Tour titles.
In July, Luján also won the University World Championship in Málaga alongside Águeda Pérez. The Spanish pair beat Ana Domínguez and Ana Cristina Sánchez 6-2, 6-2 in the final, a result confirmed by the University of Málaga. In September, Luján and Martínez reached the FIP Gold Bucharest final, where they lost 6-2, 7-5 to Lucía Martínez and Letizia Manquillo.
Recovery comes before a return to competition
Her season ends after the quarter-final appearance in Madeira. The information published so far does not specify the anatomical details of each injury or a return date. Luján now has to complete the announced recovery period before considering another tournament.
Her FIP profile remains linked with Araceli Martínez. Any return to their partnership will depend on her recovery, with no official timetable announced at this stage.
