Belgium-Netherlands: Geukens and Vanhyfte win the 40+ match
Leonie Geukens and Eva Vanhyfte put Belgium ahead in the 40+ category by beating D. Blonk and M. Smolders 6-3, 7-5. It was Belgium’s only point of the tie.
The Netherlands levelled in the 60+ match as Jacqueline Schuur and J. Van Wijk defeated Corinne Buelens and Isabelle Georges 6-2, 6-2. Marie-José Rutten and Hugoline Van Hoorn then won the 55+ match against Katrien Hermans and Annick Claes 6-4, 6-0.
I. Sterkenburg and I. Van Boven delivered the Netherlands’ third point in the 50+ category with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Sabine Appelmans and Daphne Vande Zande. The tie ended at 3-1, so the 45+ match was not required. Full tournament results are available on the official FIP page.
Belgium moves up two places from the 2024 World Cup
Belgium finishes two places higher than at the 2024 Senior World Cup, where the women’s team placed sixth. The women’s top four in Buenos Aires is Spain, the United States, the Netherlands and Belgium. Belgium won its group, reached the semi-finals and then lost 3-2 to the United States before playing for bronze. The Netherlands earn their first women’s podium in FIP Senior World Cup history. The FIP presented the bronze-medal tie as a meeting between two nations that had never previously reached the women’s podium. Portugal had taken bronze in 2018, France in 2022 and Italy in 2024.
Sabine Appelmans, who played the 50+ match on Saturday, had already expressed her pride in representing Belgium at the 2022 Senior World Cup in Las Vegas. On her official Instagram account, the former tennis player wrote:
