The London P1 semifinals take place this Saturday, August 8, at Olympia London. All four leading women’s pairs are still in the draw. In the men’s event, fifth seeds Paquito Navarro and Martín Di Nenno join the top three pairs. Play begins at 12 p.m. BST.
Alexia Putellas, Riccardo Calafiori and Kepa Arrizabalaga have attended the tournament in recent days.
Fernández-Calvo meet González-Josemaría again
Claudia Fernández and Martina Calvo are only playing their second tournament together and have already reached a second semifinal. They beat Tamara Icardo and Claudia Jensen 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Bea González and Paula Josemaría needed three sets against Jessica Castelló and Marta Talaván, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
The previous meeting is only a week old. In Pretoria, Fernández-Calvo, coached by Gaby Reca, beat González-Josemaría 6-1, 6-4 to reach a final in their first tournament as a pair. Martina Calvo is 18 and Claudia Fernández 20. London brings an immediate rematch.
In the other semifinal, Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea arrive after winning the last two events on the circuit. They beat Sofia Araújo and Marta Ortega 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Ariana Sánchez and Andrea Ustero, who missed the previous two tournaments, defeated Bea Caldera and Carmen Goenaga 7-6, 6-4 and have reached the semifinals in seven consecutive events they have played.
This matchup has already produced two notable finals this season. Sánchez-Ustero came from behind to beat Triay-Brea in Riyadh, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. After the title, Sánchez highlighted how they handled the closing stages:
We had plenty of chances, but we stayed composed in the end, and Andrea deserves huge credit for how we pulled it off.
In Rome, Triay-Brea answered with a 6-1, 7-5 win.
Navarro-Di Nenno face the No.1s, then the former partners meet
Paquito Navarro and Martín Di Nenno needed three sets to get past Edu Alonso and Aimar Goñi, 7-5, 6-7, 6-3. Since reuniting, they have reached three semifinals in their last four tournaments. In Málaga, their quarterfinal win ended with Navarro doing a short DJ set on court and Di Nenno recreating Enzo Fernández’s gesture after the 2022 World Cup.
Their next obstacle is Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, who beat Curro Cabeza and Mariano González 6-1, 6-2. The world No.1s are chasing a 13th final this season. After a win in Málaga, Coello summed up their mindset in a post-match interview:
For us it’s always special to play here in Malaga. We are in an incredible moment and we need to continue like this and focus.
The last semifinal pits Federico Chingotto and Alejandro Galán, Pretoria champions and 6-0, 6-1 winners over Momo González and Lucas Campagnolo, against Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger. Lebrón-Augsburger beat Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
The Málaga meeting is still recent. Lebrón-Augsburger came back from a set and a break down, saved two match points and won 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(7) against Chingotto-Galán. It also puts Lebrón and Galán, partners for four seasons, on opposite sides again.
