Padel rankings in Europe: why P100 means different things

A P100 does not measure the same thing everywhere in Europe. In France, the number primarily refers to a tournament category and a federation points scale. In Belgium, the P50 to P1000 series are tied to player classes and regional circuits. In Spain, the national federation does not build its ranking around a P25, P100 or P250 ladder. To compare two players' level, the tournament name alone is not enough.

  • Frequently asked questions about padel rankings in Europe

A P100 does not measure the same thing everywhere in Europe. In France, the number mainly refers to a tournament category and a federation points scale. In Belgium, it can also refer to a player’s ranking or class, with different rules depending on AFPadel, Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles and Padel Vlaanderen. In Spain, the Spanish federation does not build its national ranking around a P25, P100 or P250 ladder. To compare two players or understand who can enter a P250, P400 or P1000, the tournament name alone is not enough.

The same number can mean different things

It is easy to assume that “P100” is a European unit. It is not. Each federation sets its own tournament categories, entry conditions, ranking period and points system.

In France, a player is not “P100”. They hold a position in the national ranking and may or may not be eligible to enter a P100. In Belgium, P100 can instead be a player class. At AFPadel, an Elo conversion adds another layer. In Spain, the national federation uses a Ranking Único rather than a national P25-P100-P250 pyramid comparable with the FFT system.

In plain terms: “P100” is not a common European currency for playing level. Two players using the same label may be talking about different things.

SystemHow it works
FranceP100 is an FFT tournament category. The player has a position in the national ranking.
BelgiumP classes exist, but entry rules differ between AFPadel, Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles and Padel Vlaanderen.
SpainNo national P25-P100-P250 ladder comparable with France. The FEP uses its Ranking Único and competitions run by autonomous federations.
NetherlandsP100, P250 and P500 exist, but inside a KNLTB system specific to the Netherlands.
United KingdomThe LTA uses Grades and rankings.
ItalyThe FITP classifies players by fasce.
PortugalThe FPP combines player levels with numbered tournament classes.

Tournament category, ranking, player class and points list: four different concepts

Much of the confusion disappears once four ideas are separated.

  • The tournament category indicates the administrative level of the event and the points scale attached to it.
  • The player ranking can be a national position, as in France.
  • The player class can be a federation level such as P100, P200 or P300 in several Belgian systems.
  • The ranking list is produced from results according to a defined method: ranking window, number of results retained and points scale.

Two federations can use the same letters and numbers without using the same method behind them.

In plain terms: “I am ranked 3,500th in France” and “I am P100 in Belgium” are not two ways of writing the same ranking. They are different systems.

France: P100 is a tournament category, not the player’s ranking

In France, the FFT classifies tournaments in a pyramid including P25, P50, P100, P250, P500, P1000, P1500, P2000 and P3000 depending on the competitions offered. The number does not correspond to the player’s ranking position.

Official Ten’Up listings checked in 2026 show ranking caps for the lower categories. For men, P25, P50, P100 and P250 are respectively closed to the top 30,000, top 10,000, top 3,000 and top 800. For women, the listed limits are the top 3,000, top 1,000, top 300 and top 100.

CategoryVerified limit
Men’s P25Closed to the top 30,000 in the Ten’Up listings checked.
Men’s P50Closed to the top 10,000.
Men’s P100Closed to the top 3,000.
Men’s P250Closed to the top 800.
Women’s P25Closed to the top 3,000.
Women’s P50Closed to the top 1,000.
Women’s P100Closed to the top 300.
Women’s P250Closed to the top 100.

The result can feel counter-intuitive. A man ranked 850 is not too highly ranked for a P250 because he sits outside the top 800. A player ranked 750 cannot enter that category under that cap. In a men’s P100, number 3001 may be eligible while number 2999 is not.

Can any French player enter a P250?

No. The cap prevents players who are ranked too highly from entering lower categories. A player must also meet the other event conditions and be accepted into the draw.

This distinction matters. Being eligible to register does not guarantee a place. A tournament may receive more requests than available spots, use qualifying rounds or apply its selection procedure under the event rules.

In plain terms: “My ranking allows me to enter this P250” does not mean “I will automatically be in the draw”.

Can a much lower-ranked player register for a P500 or P1000?

The 2026 Ten’Up listings checked for P500 and P1000 events display “no ranking limitation”. The principle is therefore different from P25, P50, P100 and P250: ranking does not automatically exclude a player for being too highly or too lowly ranked.

This absence of a ranking cap does not turn a P1000 into an open event without selection. P1000 tournaments have limited places and some use a main draw plus qualifying. A player far down the ranking may therefore have the right to register while still having little chance of being selected if demand is high.

In plain terms: “no ranking limitation” means the ranking itself does not close the registration door. It does not mean every registration is accepted.

Belgium: first identify which federation is involved

Belgium is the clearest example of why context matters. Several structures use related systems without being interchangeable.

The name “AFT” is still used by many French-speaking players, but it is no longer the current name. The Association Francophone de Tennis became Tennis Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles in April 2024, then Tennis Padel Pickleball Wallonie-Bruxelles in 2025. For padel, the documents and website use Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles.

Alongside it, AFPadel has its own competition and Elo system. In Flanders, Padel Vlaanderen, part of Tennis en Padel Vlaanderen, manages its own classes and tournaments.

At national level, Padel Belgium states that the Belgian Padel Association is supported by two regional leagues: Padel Vlaanderen and Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles. The Belgian Padel Tour forms a national layer aimed at higher categories. This does not mean AFPadel uses the same regional rules as those two leagues.

In plain terms: in Belgium, asking “I am P100, can I play P400?” has no valid answer until we know whether the player means AFPadel, Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles or Padel Vlaanderen.

AFPadel: Elo determines access, not just the P100 label

At AFPadel, access to 2026 categories is based on individual Elo thresholds and a pair total. The regulations also provide an assimilation system for players coming from another Belgian federation.

For men, this reference assimilation notably links P100 to 200 Elo, P200 to 600, P300 to 1000, P400 to 1400, P500 to 1800, P700 to 2200 and P1000 to 2400. For women, the equivalents start at P50 with 100 Elo, then P100 with 200, P200 with 600, P300 with 1000, P400 with 1400 and P500 with 1800.

The AFPadel men’s table then adds minimum and maximum thresholds for each category.

CategoryAccess range
MD100Pair from 0 to 800 Elo, with 0 to 500 Elo per player.
MD200Pair from 0 to 1400, with 0 to 800 per player. Pair priority at 800.
MD300Pair from 0 to 2200, with 0 to 1200 per player. Priority at 1300.
MD400Pair from 1200 to 3000, with 600 to 1600 per player. Priority at 2000.
MD500Pair from 1600 to 3800, with 800 to 2000 per player. Priority at 2700.
MD700Pair from 3200 to 4600, with at least 1400 per player. Priority at 3600.
MD1000Pair of at least 3600, with at least 1800 per player. Priority at 4200.

Can an AFPadel P100 play MD400?

Not on the P100 assimilation alone. A reference P100 is worth 200 Elo, while MD400 requires at least 600 Elo per player and 1200 for the pair. Two players at 200 Elo each therefore remain below the threshold.

An example makes the system easier to read. A player assimilated to P200 is worth 600 Elo and a P400 is worth 1400. Together they total 2000 Elo. Each player fits the individual MD400 range and the pair reaches the 2000 priority threshold.

In plain terms: at AFPadel, the P100 label gives an initial indication, but the real entry key is the Elo of the player and the pair.

Official reference: AFPadel 2026 sporting regulations.

Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles: P classes with rules for playing higher

The 2026 Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles regulations use classes from P50 to P1000 for men, with an adapted pyramid depending on category. The class ranking is recalculated twice a year.

To enter a category above one’s own class, the general rule requires at least one of the two partners to hold the class of the target category, while also respecting the minimum class required for the draw.

The regulations add another option: two players from the class immediately below can request to play one category higher as a “lower pair”. That pair is not prioritised and is admitted only if places remain.

For men, published minimums include P700 for P1000, P500 for P700, P400 for P500, P300 for P400, P200 for P300 and P100 for P200.

Can a Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles P100 play P400?

No, not directly on the basis of a P100 class. Men’s P400 requires at least P300. The option for two players from the immediately lower class allows, for example, two P300 players to request P400 as a lower pair. It does not allow two P100 players to jump several levels.

A P100 can target P200 under the published conditions. A P100-P200 pair can enter P200 under the general rule because one partner holds the target class. Two P100 players may also request P200 as a lower pair, but they are not prioritised over pairs that directly meet the expected level.

In plain terms: P100 to P200 can be possible under the rules. P100 to P400 is not. The system allows controlled progression, not unrestricted jumps of several classes.

Ranking and class are not the same thing either. The 2026 regulations provide for a 52-week ranking based on the eight best tournaments, while the player’s class is recalculated at set points in the season.

Official reference: CUPRA Padel Circuit 2026 regulations.

Padel Vlaanderen: its P100 comes with different rights again

Padel Vlaanderen uses classes to indicate playing level and the series a player can enter. For men, the scale notably runs from P100 to P1000. For women, it starts at P50 and runs to P700 in the system described by the federation.

The published registration rule is precise: a player may play in their own class or one series higher if their partner holds the higher class. The federation’s own example is explicit: a P100 paired with a P200 may play P200. A player may not move down into a series below their class.

Padel Vlaanderen also uses a system of “pasjes” that can grant additional rights to play at a higher level after certain results. This mechanism depends on performance and does not change the player’s official class after every tournament.

Can a Padel Vlaanderen P100 play P400?

Not on the basis of P100 class alone. The general published rule allows a player to move up one series when the partner holds that series. A P100 with a P200 can therefore play P200. It does not create a general right for a P100 to enter P400 directly.

In plain terms: the partner and the rights attached to the ranking matter. Seeing “P100” on a player profile does not mean that player can freely choose P100, P200, P300 or P400.

Official references: Padel Vlaanderen classes and tournament registration rules.

Belgium: the table answering “can a P100 play higher?”

SituationAnswer
AFPadel P100 to MD400No under the reference assimilation. P100 is worth 200 Elo and MD400 requires at least 600 Elo per player.
Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles P100 to P200Possible with a P200 partner, or for two P100s as a lower pair if places remain. The lower pair is not prioritised.
Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles P100 to P400No. Men’s P400 requires at least P300.
Padel Vlaanderen P100 to P200Yes with a partner classed P200, under the published registration rules.
Padel Vlaanderen P100 to P400No on the P100 class alone. The general rule does not allow an unrestricted jump of several series.
Padel BelgiumThe Belgian Padel Tour is a separate national layer, announced in 2026 for P1000/P700 men and P700/P500/P400 women depending on category.

This table explains why conversations between Belgian players become confusing so quickly. Saying “P100” without naming the federation is not enough to know registration rights.

Spain: no national P100, but a Ranking Único

The Federación Española de Pádel does not classify its national circuit using a P25, P100, P250 or P500 ladder comparable with the FFT. Its Ranking Único aggregates eligible results over 52 weeks and retains the best 13 results under the 2026 technical regulations.

For absolute competitions, the value of an event depends on several criteria. The 2026 regulations divide that value between prize money, participant rankings and the number of pairs entered. Competitions run by autonomous federations can also count towards the Ranking Único when they meet federal requirements.

So who can “play higher” in Spain?

The question cannot be translated as “can a P100 play a P400?” because those classes do not structure the FEP national ranking. The player has to identify the event, its regulations, admission criteria and, when the competition depends on an autonomous federation, the relevant territorial rules.

In plain terms: a French player travelling to Spain should not look for the P number that matches their French level. They need to check the ranking requirements and entry conditions for the specific Spanish tournament.

Official reference: FEP Ranking Único.

Netherlands: P100, P250 and P500 exist, but they are not French categories

The Dutch case deserves separate attention. The KNLTB also uses the labels P100, P250 and P500. Its system remains Dutch: those competitions sit inside KNLTB ranking and tournament rules.

When too many pairs register, acceptance is not based only on choosing the correct category. The KNLTB regulations provide for selection using ranking points, with placement rules and possible wild cards.

In plain terms: a Dutch P100 and a French P100 carry the same label, but that does not mean a player accepted in one automatically has the level or entry right for the other.

Official reference: KNLTB padel tournament regulations.

United Kingdom: Grades with different acceptance criteria

The LTA uses Grades rather than a P100-P250-P500 pyramid. Acceptance rules vary with the level of competition.

For Grades 1 and 2, the LTA uses the FIP ranking first and then the LTA ranking for acceptance and seeding. For Grades 3 and 4, the LTA ranking is the reference. For Grade 5, acceptance works on a first-come, first-served basis, while the LTA ranking is still used for seeding.

In plain terms: in the United Kingdom, moving up means targeting a higher Grade and having the ranking required to be accepted, not moving from P100 to P250.

Official reference: LTA acceptance criteria.

Italy: fasce replace the P100 logic

The FITP publishes padel rankings by fasce. Players are therefore grouped in ranking bands rather than in a Belgian-style P100 or P200 class.

Access then depends on the competition regulations. Championships and pre-qualification events may reserve certain stages for specific fasce before better-ranked players enter at a later stage.

In plain terms: asking “what is my P100 equivalent in Italy?” oversimplifies the system. You need to know the player’s fascia and the regulations of the event concerned.

Official reference: FITP competitions and tournaments.

Portugal: player level and tournament class are two separate pieces of information

Portugal distinguishes several player levels. For men, the 2026 FPP regulations place M1 in the top 64, M2 from positions 65 to 250, M3 from 251 to 500, M4 from 501 to 750, M5 from 751 to 1000 and M6 from 1001 onwards. Women follow their own thresholds.

Participation normally takes place at the player’s own level or immediately above. The regulations also allow a player to move higher when paired with a partner belonging to the target level, within the stated limits and with special restrictions for level 1 and certain recently highly ranked players.

The FPP separately classifies tournaments as 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 25,000, 50,000 and 100,000. The tournament number is therefore not the player’s individual level. FIP events held in Portugal are connected to this national scale according to the correspondences set out in the regulations.

In plain terms: “I am M3” and “I play a 10,000 tournament” describe two different things: the first describes the player, the second the event.

Official reference: FPP General Regulations 2026.

The FIP ranking is the best common reference for international players

At international level, the FIP ranking provides the most comparable federation reference. In 2026, it retains the best 22 results from Premier Padel and the CUPRA FIP Tour over a 52-week cycle. Points depend on tournament category and the round reached.

This ranking allows a more coherent comparison between a Belgian, French, Spanish or Dutch player who regularly competes internationally. It does not solve the comparison for every amateur. A strong national-circuit player may have few or no FIP points.

The FIP works with national federations to structure European competition. On 22 July 2026, when announcing the 2027 and 2029 editions of the FIP Euro Padel Cup, its president Luigi Carraro summed up that objective of continuity.

It also represents a further step in the continued development of padel in Europe and internationally.

Luigi Carraro, FIP President, 22 July 2026. Source: International Padel Federation.

Ranking reference: FIP ranking system 2026.

Can France, Belgium and Spain be converted with one equivalence table?

Not officially and not reliably with a rule such as “Belgian P100 = French P250”. The federations reviewed do not publish one common conversion table covering these systems.

A sporting estimate can be built for a specific player or tournament, but it should combine several factors:

  1. the player’s ranking or class in their own country;
  2. the tournament entry criteria;
  3. the rankings of the opponents in the draw;
  4. recent results in comparable draws;
  5. the FIP ranking when the player competes internationally;
  6. the number of places and the tournament selection process.

In plain terms: the best equivalence is not the tournament name. It is the level of the players who are actually accepted into the draw.

What a player should check before entering a tournament abroad

Six checks prevent most unpleasant surprises.

  1. Identify the federation organising or sanctioning the tournament.
  2. Check the type of ranking used: national position, P class, Elo, fascia, level or Grade.
  3. Read the minimum and maximum requirements for the target category.
  4. Check the role of the partner, because some federations allow a player to move up when the partner holds the higher level.
  5. Separate registration from acceptance: being allowed to register does not guarantee a place.
  6. Compare the strength of the draw using participant rankings and results.

This approach is more useful than a universal converter that would give a false sense of precision.

European padel is still made up of national systems

The rules of the game are shared, but competition pyramids still follow national logic. France mainly classifies its tournaments by P categories and its players by national rank. Belgium uses several systems depending on the federation. Spain relies on its Ranking Único and autonomous federations. The Netherlands reuses some P labels inside a different framework. The United Kingdom, Italy and Portugal use other reference systems again.

The practical consequence is clear. A player should never infer their European level from a category name alone. Before moving up or playing abroad, they need to check the local rules, the access rights attached to their class, pair selection and the actual strength of the draw.

“P100” remains an excellent shorthand between players in the same federation. As soon as a border is crossed, it needs its context back.

Frequently asked questions about padel rankings in Europe

1. Is a Belgian P100 equivalent to a French P100 ?

No. In France, P100 is an FFT tournament category. In Belgium, P100 can be a player class and entry rights differ between AFPadel, Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles and Padel Vlaanderen. There is no official one-to-one conversion.

2. Can a Belgian P100 play a P400 ?

It depends on the federation, but not directly in the systems checked. At AFPadel, P100 assimilation is 200 Elo while MD400 requires at least 600 Elo per player. At Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles, men’s P400 requires at least P300. At Padel Vlaanderen, the general rule does not give a P100 an unrestricted right to jump straight to P400.

3. Can two P100 players enter a P200 in Wallonia-Brussels ?

They can request to play one category higher as a lower pair. They are not prioritised and are accepted only if places remain after pairs that meet the priority criteria.

4. Can a Padel Vlaanderen P100 play P200 ?

Yes with a partner classed P200 under the published general rule. Padel Vlaanderen also uses additional playing rights linked to results, but a P100 does not have a general right to choose any higher series.

5. Do AFPadel and Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles use the same ranking ?

No. AFPadel uses an Elo system and its own access thresholds. Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles uses P classes and specific rules for entering higher categories.

6. Does the AFT still exist under that name ?

The former Association Francophone de Tennis changed its name. It became Tennis Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles in 2024, then Tennis Padel Pickleball Wallonie-Bruxelles in 2025. “AFT” is still used in conversation, but it is no longer the current official name.

7. What is the role of Padel Belgium ?

Padel Belgium states that the Belgian Padel Association is supported nationally by Padel Vlaanderen and Padel Wallonie-Bruxelles. The Belgian Padel Tour and national-team activity belong to this national layer.

8. Can a French player ranked 2500 play a men’s P100 ?

No in the 2026 Ten’Up P100s checked, because the category is closed to the top 3000. A player ranked 3001 is outside that cap, subject to the other rules and acceptance into the draw.

9. Can a French player ranked 1000 play a men’s P250 ?

Yes under the verified cap, because the men’s P250s checked are closed to the top 800. Eligibility does not guarantee acceptance if the tournament receives more requests than available places.

10. Can any French player play a P500 or P1000 ?

The 2026 Ten’Up listings checked show “no ranking limitation” for the P500 and P1000 events reviewed. A player may therefore not be excluded by ranking alone, but draw capacity, qualifying and selection can still prevent admission.

11. What is the difference between being allowed to register and being accepted ?

Eligibility means the rules allow the registration request. Acceptance means the pair actually receives a place in the draw. A full tournament can reject an eligible pair according to its selection criteria.

12. Is there an official P100 in Spain ?

The FEP does not use a national P25-P100-P250 pyramid comparable with the FFT. It relies on the Ranking Único and the rules for national competitions and autonomous federations.

13. Why are there also P100 tournaments in the Netherlands ?

The KNLTB uses P100, P250 and P500 labels in its own system. The identical label does not create an equivalence with French FFT categories or Belgian player classes.

14. How does the United Kingdom system work ?

The LTA uses Grades. Grades 1 and 2 first use the FIP ranking and then the LTA ranking for acceptance. Grades 3 and 4 use the LTA ranking. Grade 5 notably uses first-come, first-served acceptance.

15. How does the Italian system work ?

The FITP groups players into fasce. Entry conditions then depend on the competition and the stage concerned. There is no national P100 to convert directly.

16. How does the Portuguese system work ?

The FPP distinguishes player levels, such as M1 to M6 for men, and tournament classes from 2,000 to 100,000. Individual level and tournament value are two separate pieces of information.

17. Which ranking is best for comparing two European players ?

The FIP ranking is the best common federation reference when both players regularly compete internationally. For national and amateur players, it must be supplemented with the local ranking and the strength of the draws they have played.

18. Can a converter be built from Belgian P100 to France or Spain ?

Not with a simple official equivalence. An estimate can be built from local ranking, entry criteria, opponents faced, recent results and, when available, the FIP ranking.
