At the FIP Platinum Lyon, Dylan Guichard and Adam Axelsson will not reach the quarter-finals. One day after beating fifth seeds Sanyo Gutiérrez and Javi Garrido, the Frenchman and the Swede lost 7-5, 6-3 to Álvaro Montiel Caruso and Daniel Santigosa Sastre in the round of 16.
Their Lyon run therefore ends after two matches in the main draw. Guichard and Axelsson had produced one of the notable results of the opening round by coming back to beat Garrido and Gutiérrez 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. This time, they could not extend their run against a Spanish pair that had already defeated Yoan Boronad and Jérémy Robert 6-2, 6-3 in the previous round.
Montiel and Santigosa make the difference in two sets
The first set was the tighter of the two. Montiel and Santigosa took it 7-5 before creating a wider gap in the second set, which they closed out 6-3. The result ends Guichard and Axelsson’s run before Friday’s quarter-finals in Lyon.
For Dylan Guichard, the tournament is still marked by the win over Garrido and Sanyo. The FIP highlighted that result in its report on the opening day. The Frenchman, ranked world No. 72 in the ranking published on September 21, had combined with Axelsson to come back from a set down against the fifth-seeded pair.
Guichard and Axelsson leave Lyon after two rounds
The contrast between the two rounds sums up their tournament. Against Garrido and Gutiérrez, Guichard and Axelsson lost the opening set before turning the match around. Against Montiel and Santigosa, they dropped a tight first set and could not force a third.
Montiel and Santigosa move on to the quarter-finals. Guichard and Axelsson leave the FIP Platinum Lyon with a win over a seeded pair and a round-of-16 finish. The tournament, with €130,000 in prize money, continues until Sunday, September 27 at the Palais des Sports de Gerland and All In Country.
