Historic wild card for Buenos Aires P1
Padel has a new face to remember, and it comes straight from the north-east of Argentina. Santino Contreras, from El Soberbio in the province of Misiones, is set to become the youngest player in history to enter a main draw on the Premier Padel circuit. His target: the Buenos Aires P1 2026, scheduled from May 11 to 17 at Parque Roca, just after the Asunción P2 currently underway in Paraguay.
The story is beautiful because it’s being played out to within a few days of each other. Contreras turns 16 on Saturday May 9, just 48 hours before the tournament kicks off. In doing so, he will break the record previously held by Spain’s Iago Fuertes, who made his main draw debut at the age of 16 years and 16 days. In just a few hours, the Misionero’s name will be inscribed in the world padel record books, even before he hits his first official ball in the big leagues.
The course that unlocked everything: FIP Silver Mendoza
The wild card didn’t fall from the sky. Contreras and his 18-year-old partner Naim Díaz earned their ticket by reaching the semifinals of the FIP Silver Mendoza at the end of April. Both leaders of the Liga de Menores de l’Asociación de Pádel Argentino, they have been stringing together results on the FIP on tour since the start of the season. For the record, in 2026, Contreras has already passed through :
- Champion of the FIP Bronze in Santa Maria (Brazil).
- Ijuí FIP Bronze finalist.
- Semifinalists in Asunción and Mendoza.
In Mendoza, their performance was anything but anecdotal: a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Argañaras / Marcial in the round of 32, a 7-6, 6-3 win over Luppo / Maldonado in the round of 16, then a hard-fought 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 quarterfinal win over de Astoreca / Rivero. The organizers of the Buenos Aires P1 decided to give the wild card to Contreras / Díaz, in a bid to showcase young Argentine talent.
For the province of Misiones, the story takes on another dimension. Contreras will not be alone in representing his region in Buenos Aires: Leo Augsburger, also from Misiones and just crowned Brussels P2 alongside Juan Lebrón, will also be present. A first in world padel: two Misionero players in the same elite tournament.
What it says about the new generation
Beyond the record, the Contreras case illustrates a fundamental trend. The new South American generation is arriving younger, more structured and with already solid results on the FIP tour. A few months earlier, it was Facundo Dehnike, born in 2008, who received a wild card for Asunción P2 2026 alongside Marcel Font. The calendar bears witness to this: the window of opportunity is opening earlier and earlier, and organizers are no longer hesitating to bank on players aged 15-17 to bring the main draws to life.
Contreras himself remains lucid about the significance of the moment. When asked after qualifying, he put the record aspect into perspective: what mattered above all was playing Premier Padel, a dream he had carried with him since the very beginning. The Buenos Aires P1 will also offer him an exceptional frame for his first steps. The tournament, which in 2025 broke the world attendance record for a padel match with 16,156 spectators at the Parque Roca, is set to sell out again. It’s hard to imagine a more memorable setting for a first main draw at the age of 16.
It now remains to be seen what the draw will look like. Premier Padel and the FIP will confirm the order of play in the coming days. Whatever the opponent, the sporting stakes will be secondary: Contreras is not expected to be the favourite, but to send out yet another signal from Argentine padel about its ability to produce players ready for the very highest level at an increasingly early stage. The rest will be decided on the court, but the first point has already been won in the locker room.
To remember:
- Santino Contreras, 16 on May 9, will be the youngest player in history to enter a Premier Padel main draw.
- His wild card for the Buenos Aires P1 2026 (May 11-17) came after a semifinal at the FIP Silver Mendoza with Naim Díaz.
- He beat the record set by Spanish player Iago Fuertes, who made his debut at the age of 16 years and 16 days.
- A historic first for the Argentine province of Misiones, with two players (Contreras and Augsburger) in the same elite tournament.
