A controlled quarterfinal sends the siblings into the last four
Sofia and Pedro Araújo entered the mixed event with the top-seed label. Their tournament began in the quarterfinals, where they beat Cyprus pair Sergios Kyratzis and Maria Siopacha 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday. The win puts Portugal in the semifinals of a draw that will award the first Mediterranean Games medals in padel.
The next matchup is set. Greece defeated Tunisia’s Dora Chamli and Mehdi Elloumi, the No. 4 seeds, 6-4, 7-5. Pavlos-Louis Balafas and Christina Styliani Ntanou will therefore face Portugal on Thursday for a place in the final. The FIP schedule places the semifinals on August 27, followed by the bronze-medal matches and all three finals on Friday, August 28.
Sofia said the seeding does not alter the target:
I don’t feel any pressure. We came here to try to win the most important medal. Whether you are the No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 seed makes no difference, the goal remains the same.
The context matters. The pair does not have the routines of a partnership that competes together every week. Sofia and Pedro have known each other all their lives, but Taranto is their first serious test together at this level.
A family partnership with different competitive reference points
The mixed doubles draw at the Mediterranean Games creates pairings that are rarely seen on the professional tour. The Araújo partnership is a clear example. Sofia competes at the top of the women’s game. Pedro also has international experience, notably in men’s doubles with Pedro Graça. Together, they have to turn a lifetime of familiarity into useful competitive habits.
Sofia described what that means to her:
Playing with someone from your family is a unique feeling, and doing it for your country makes it even more special.
Pedro focuses on how well they read each other on court. He says he watches his sister play often and knows her habits. That familiarity can speed up adjustments, but it also allows a level of directness that ordinary partners may not use between points. Sofia acknowledged that siblings sometimes say things to each other that two teammates normally would not. Their challenge is practical: keep the chemistry without letting emotion affect decision-making.
The family link did not begin in Taranto. In an interview published by the FIP in 2025, Sofia explained that her first padel tournament had been played with her mother and that several relatives already played the sport. The Mediterranean Games now extend that family story into an international medal event.
Sofia Araújo is managing two campaigns in the same week
The mixed event is only part of Sofia’s schedule. In the women’s draw, she partners Ana Nogueira. The Portuguese top seeds opened on Monday with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Türkiye’s Zeynep Kocak and Didenaz Polat. On Wednesday, they are due to face Italy’s Giulia Dal Pozzo and Carlotta Casali, who also won their opening match 6-0, 6-0.
That women’s quarterfinal adds a physical and mental demand to Sofia’s week. The rules allow athletes entered in more than one category to play several matches, with recovery time scheduled between them. Energy management therefore matters alongside the tactical preparation required for two different partnerships.
Sofia’s ranking adds to the attention. The FIP lists her as the highest-ranked player among the 88 athletes in the Taranto padel competition. She was world No. 8 at the start of the event, making her a reference point in the women’s draw and the most prominent player in Portugal’s mixed team. Yet the two assignments ask for different things: building a women’s partnership with Nogueira and guiding a newer family pairing with her brother.
The first days have already moved several favorites out of position
The men’s draw has already produced a major change. Youssef Hossam and Georges Wakim of Egypt eliminated Spain’s top seeds Guille Collado and Pol Hernandez 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. The Egyptian pair saved a match point in the deciding set before closing the match after two hours.
That result opens the top half of the men’s bracket. Hossam and Wakim are due to face Italy’s Marco Cassetta and Simone Iacovino on Wednesday. On the other side, France’s Bastien Blanqué and Dylan Guichard reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Monaco’s Nicolas Fedoroff and Noah Minioni. Their next opponents are Flavio Abbate and Alvaro Montiel.
France also remains involved in the women’s and mixed draws. Lucile Pothier and Louise Bahurel reached the women’s quarterfinals, while Louise Bahurel and Dylan Guichard are scheduled to play Slovenia’s Simon Javoršek and Tina Lah in the mixed event on Wednesday. Italy’s Giulia Dal Pozzo and Marco Cassetta are due to face Kosovo in the other mixed quarterfinal from the bottom half.
Mediterranean Games 2026 padel: 88 athletes and three draws in Taranto
The Mediterranean Games 2026 padel competition runs from August 21 to 28 in Taranto, Italy. Padel is appearing as a medal sport at the Games for the first time. The tournament brings together 88 athletes from 18 delegations across men’s, women’s and mixed draws at Parco Mediterraneo Salinella. Official information, draws and orders of play are available on the FIP event page.
The FIP lists Albania, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia, Türkiye and Athletica Vaticana, which is taking part on a demonstration basis.
The closing phase is compact. Semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, followed by bronze-medal matches and finals on Friday. For Sofia and Pedro Araújo, the next task is to beat Greece and reach the mixed final. Their family connection gives the campaign its personal angle, but the medal will still be decided by familiar competitive details: serve, return, net position and management of tight points.
Portugal is now one win from the mixed doubles final. Before that match, Sofia is due back on court with Ana Nogueira on Wednesday. Her week in Taranto is therefore being played across two draws, with two partners and the same national shirt.
