Pretoria P1: Leal and Guerrero beat Coello and Tapia and end their record run

At the Pretoria P1, Leal and Guerrero delivered the biggest win of their young careers. By defeating Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia 7-5, 7-5, the childhood friends ended the world No.1 pair’s official run of 27 consecutive finals and reached their first Premier Padel final. This is the story of an upset built on a clear game plan, renewed trust and a partnership that began before they were ten.

Match point ends with a Coello ball sailing out. Fran Guerrero drops to the court, Javi Leal rushes towards him, and the two Spaniards remain locked in an embrace for several seconds. The 7-5, 7-5 scoreline almost looks too clean to explain what has just happened: in Pretoria, the No.7 seeds have beaten Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, the pair who had turned every tournament into a Sunday appointment.

The result means far more than qualification. According to the official counts published by Premier Padel and the International Padel Federation, Coello and Tapia had reached 27 consecutive finals. They had not missed a title match since the Asunción P2 in May 2025. Some reports mentioned 26 finals; Actu Padel uses the figure of 27 published by both official sources.

A victory that ends fifteen months of dominance

Coello and Tapia had done more than string finals together. They had established a new normal: whatever the country, court speed or opponent, the world No.1s almost always found a route to the title match. In Pretoria, that run ended in one hour and twenty minutes, through two sets with identical scores but very different levels of tension.

Leal and Guerrero took the first set by sticking to a simple idea: do not wait for the error, move forward whenever the ball allows it and refuse to let Coello establish his enormous court coverage. The 7-5 rewarded the more accurate pair in the closing exchanges and, above all, the team that stayed more consistent in its intent.

The second set gave the upset its mental dimension. At 4-3, the Spaniards earned three break points at 0-40. Coello and Tapia saved all three, then broke serve to lead 5-4. Many teams would have read that sequence as the inevitable return of the favourites. Leal and Guerrero did the opposite: they recovered their tactical thread, won three straight games and closed the match with another Guerrero counterattack.

“That was the first moment when we truly believed we could win. The nerves made us move away from the plan a little, but we reacted in time and returned to what had rewarded us: staying organised, staying together and not leaving the script.”

The previous day: seven match points saved against Lebrón and Augsburger

The upset was not created in the semi-final alone. Twenty-four hours earlier, Leal and Guerrero had already survived a quarter-final that could have emptied them: a 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 win over Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger, with the deciding tie-break taken 13-11 after they saved seven match points.

That comeback may have changed their relationship with danger. Against the No.3 pair, they had to accept survival mode. Against the No.1s, they played to impose themselves. The distinction matters: Pretoria was not a random upset in an open draw, but a week in which the Andalusian pair eliminated two of the top three seeds in succession.

Both players had also just celebrated their 23rd birthdays, two days apart: Javi Leal was born on 28 July 2003 and Fran Guerrero on 30 July. The dates almost sum up their shared path. They grew up in the same generation, met at a very young age and learned to win together long before entering the professional tour.

Two friends and a Spanish title before the age of ten

Leal and Guerrero have played together since they were nine. The FIP recalls that they were not yet ten when they won the Spanish championship in their age category. Pretoria marks their third spell together on the Premier Padel tour, following sporting separations that never ended their friendship.

Their history changes the meaning of the post-match images. Leal wrote on social media that reaching a first final together was even more special after playing side by side “since we were kids”. This is not a partnership created solely by ranking mathematics or a gap in the calendar. It is the reunion of two friends who know each other’s strengths and also understand each other’s reactions under pressure.

That long-standing knowledge is a strength, but it can also create sparks. After the semi-final, Guerrero admitted that such deep trust can sometimes damage their communication. One overly direct remark or a poorly expressed frustration can briefly turn closeness into a problem. Their response has become almost ritualistic: an explanation, a hug and then the next point.

“We have known each other for a very long time. Sometimes that works in our favour and sometimes against us. There can be a small spark because we trust each other so much, then we hug and carry on.”

The tactical plan: bypass Coello and make Tapia work

The victory cannot be explained simply by an imperfect day from the world No.1s. It was built first on a readable plan executed with discipline. Leal and Guerrero tried to reduce Coello’s influence, because his reach closes an enormous part of the net, and instead made Tapia play more balls in the diagonal while forcing him through repeated movements.

  • Play low and fast: in the decisive moments, they limited high lobs that would have allowed Coello and Tapia to get underneath the ball on a lively court at altitude.
  • Take the net without rushing: short trajectories and chiquitas were used to move forward, not to force an immediate winner.
  • Protect Guerrero through the middle: Leal communicated constantly to close the gaps while Guerrero absorbed pace and turned defence into counterattack.
  • Release Leal’s finishing power: when the ball became attackable, the left-side player committed to the smash and out-of-court play without trying to overpower every rally.

The return game also mattered. Coello and Tapia did not find their usual efficiency with the first attacking shots, which allowed the outsiders to begin more points from a neutral position. Guerrero could then hold his diagonal, use a compact and solid forehand volley, and let Leal step in when the ball sat up.

Asked whether they had discovered a “code” for beating the world No.1s, Guerrero did not claim to have found a hidden weakness. His explanation was more revealing: the transformation came from their own side of the court.

“I do not know exactly what the code is to beat them. What changed from the other tournaments is that Javi and I both played with enjoyment, with a clear idea and as a team. Our greatest weapon is that we have improved as a team.”

A first Premier Padel final, not the end of the story

The win sends Leal and Guerrero into their first Premier Padel final. They will face Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto, who defeated Sanyo Gutiérrez and Juanlu Esbrí 7-5, 6-4. It will be a different challenge: less vertical court coverage than Coello provides, but immense speed, elite defence around the fence and constant pressure in the diagonal.

Leal described the objective without manufacturing a heroic speech: enjoy it, play as they had all week and avoid thinking too soon about the weight of a final. That simplicity matches what the pair showed in Pretoria. They did not beat the world No.1s by chasing a miracle on every point; they beat them by returning again and again to their organisation.

The tournament is already historic for them, but their post-match message refused to treat the job as complete: “this is not over”. It is a familiar sporting phrase, yet here it has a concrete meaning. After saving seven match points, eliminating Lebrón-Augsburger and then ending the most imposing run on the men’s tour, the two childhood friends now have a title to play for.

In Pretoria, the ranking called them the No.7 pair. Across four decisive games, two closing stretches and one final Guerrero counterattack, they looked above all like a team that knew exactly why it was there.
